Choir Open For New Members
Visually Impaired Choir Invites New Recruits
Southend in Sight’s visually impaired choir began last year, meeting at their centre on Hamlet Court Road. The choir meet twice a month (the second and fourth Wednesday from 2-3:30pm) to practice and are ready to attract some new recruits.
The singing group, called the ‘Insight Singers’, have learnt about 15 songs, and so far performed at the charity’s Christmas volunteer celebration. Their next public performance will be at Southend in Sight’s AGM this October. From September, they are meeting at a new, larger venue – Avenue Baptist Church on Milton Road in Westcliff – in order to accommodate more people.
The group vary in ability and experience, but they do thoroughly enjoy every singing session. Jackie Blackledge, who initially asked for the choir to be set up and has been a member since the start, says: “Singing really does cheer you up. Living with sight loss can be isolating, but being part of a group is very uplifting. I always have a smile on my face at the end of each meeting”.
