Advice & Information

We know that being diagnosed with an eye condition can be overwhelming and that living with sight loss can be challenging. We are here to support you and your loved ones on your journey together.

As a small local charity, we can offer advice and support over the phone or in person at our Centre at 117 Hamlet Court Road.

If you have a newly diagnosed eye condition, pre-existing condition or gradually deteriorating eyesight, we can help you maintain your independence and make life a little easier.

We are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm.

You are welcome to drop in for advice, but it is advisable to book an appointment to ensure the relevant person is available to help you.

We also have a drop-in session every Wednesday from 10:30am to 12:30pm for general advice at our Centre with visually impaired volunteers.

We can offer practical advice and guidance for people of all ages in the following areas:

  • Magnification and lighting.
  • Equipment in the home to help with low vision.
  • Tech Support for smartphones, tablets and laptops.
  • Benefits advice.

We also offer a “Sight Loss MOT” to anyone we feel would benefit from a more in-depth assessment. This helps us identify the services, support and training that will help maintain independence, wellbeing and choice for blind and partially sighted people.

The Sight Loss MOT focuses on the following areas:

  • Understanding your eye condition and the registration process.
  • Making the best use of your sight.
  • Your health and wellbeing.
  • Managing at home and equipment aids.
  • Getting out and about.
  • Your finances and planning for the future.
  • Work, learning and having your say.
  • Having someone to talk to.

Our Sight Loss Advisor we will go through each relevant section to identify where support may be needed and the best way this can be provided. Fact sheets with further information are available covering each section in more detail.

Support needs and aspirations will be unique to each individual seeking our help. We can, with permission, work closely with health, social care and other charities in the area to bring together the information, equipment, training and support that is right for you.

Please be assured that the information we record is kept securely and we do not share it with anyone else without an individual’s consent.
